Royal Oaks Plantation

<bt>Although no longer standing, the long ago house is now marked by a low stone wall that reaches out from the woods near Braddock Road. In the distance a large oak tree towers above the rest. That tree is 200 years old, and still hugs the land that Royal Oaks was built on. Originally erected between 1765 and 1770, the house was named for the type of trees that crowded the land and sheltered the long drive from the road to the house. It may have been used by Union Generals Irvin McDowell and John Pope during the First and Second Battles of Manassas. Many also believe that this house was a safe-haven for Colonel Mosby and his raiders. In 1962 the house was dismantled and the materials were moved to Fauquier County. The house was never rebuilt and in spring of 2005 the pieces were brought back to Centreville.
