Bishop Ireton grad Andy Burns has spent the last two years deep down the University of Virginia bench, grabbing mostly garbage time. And that might be enough.

The 6-foot-8, 212-pounder reportedly is considering quitting the basketball team to preserve his two remaining years of eligibility until after he graduates from U-Va.

According to Burns, who has talked with coach Dave Leitao about his situation, he would wait until graduate school — possibly medical school — where he’d have two years left to play.

As a senior, the floppy red-headed Burns had scholarship offers from American and Vermont, but elected to be a walk-on for the Cavaliers. After playing in 13 games as a freshman, Burns played in only eight games despite Virginia’s disappointing 17-16 season.

In his senior season at Ireton, he averaged 16 points and eight rebounds and was named the team’s most valuable player.
