Oktoberfest Benefits Seniors

Port City Brewery hosts Meals On Wheels fundraiser.

— The award-winning Port City Brewery hosted the inaugural Senior Services of Alexandria Oktoberfest tour and tasting fundraiser Oct. 16 to support the Meals On Wheels program for homebound seniors.

“We know there are seniors going hungry out there,” said Executive Director Janet Barnett. “We already provide meals to about 70 homebound seniors but because of pride, there are many more who won't raise their hands and say 'I need help.'”

More than 100 attendees turned out to support the program and to sample the locally-brewed craft beers, including the Monumental IPA, which was just awarded the Bronze Medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

“We're honored to support the Meals On Wheels program,” said Port City's tasting room manager Jen Chace. “We're also proud to introduce a new audience to our selection of beers, which also recently won a gold and two bronze medals at the Virginia Craft Beer Festival in Charlottesville last month.”

Barnett conceived of the event to raise awareness and funds specifically for the Meals On Wheels program, one of many that Senior Services provides for city residents.

“We want people to know that we are here for them,” Barnett said. “Even on a temporary basis, like when someone comes home from the hospital or can't use a stove, we are here to help see that no senior in this city ever goes hungry.”
