Each year, the firefighters of West Centreville Station 38 honor the firefighters who died in the 9/11 tragedy in New York by placing flags outside their station. Some 343 flags are planted in the ground to represent the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the Twin Towers.
“Each flag has a tag with a particular person’s name, rank and fire station,” said Station 38 Capt. Christopher Brown. “We placed them outside on Sept. 9 and read each name aloud as we did it.”
