Sana Maboneza, a 39-year-old man from College Point, N. Y. died at the scene of a four-vehicle crash on the Springfield interchange at mile marker 56.
Maboneza was driving south on I-495 in a Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle on the evening of Dec. 1 when he unexpectedly swerved right in the direction of the I-95 exit, Virginia State Police said in a statement.
Witness statements as well as the ongoing investigation determined the Highlander struck a Jeep Commander SUV while swerving that was in the center lane.
The Highlander then stopped suddenly in the travel lane. Virginia State Police said evidence suggests Maboneza exited the vehicle.
The Highlander was then hit by a Dodge Caravan minivan heading south on I-495 that was unable to stop in time.
The next vehicle, a Lincoln Town Car, struck the Caravan in front of it.
“Meanwhile, the impact of those crashes thrust the driver of the Highlander into the right travel lane,” the VSP statement said.
Maboneza died at the scene of the crash, while the driver and two passengers from the Caravan were taken to the hospital, treated and released.
Virginia State Police responded to the crash at 10:14 p.m. They reopened southbound lanes of I-495 by 3:32 a.m. Friday morning, Dec. 2.
