Developer Halle Cos. has decided to change its plans for Kingstowne Towne center.
Rather than updating the retail center with 1.2 million square feet of office space, as was the objective approved in 2008, instead they aim to develop 886,000 square feet in four buildings for up to 800 new apartments and condos.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the updated plan Tuesday, June 21.
As part of the mixed-use community-building, the Kingstowne Towne Center redevelopment would comprise 52 percent residential space, 29 percent retail space and 19 percent office space.
Halle would add 68,000 square feet of new shops and restaurants to the existing retail at Kingstowne.
Enhancing the pedestrian-friendly quality of the towne center, Halle plans to update the public plaza as well with a seasonal ice skating rink, water feature and new landscaping and seating.
Ten percent of the new residential space would be reserved for senior adults ages 55 and older.
Marcus Wadsworth who handles land use for Supervisor Jeff McKay (D-Lee District) said Halle has yet to submit a site plan for the project, but expects they will soon.
