The administrative investigation of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s deputies involved with the Feb. 8, 2015 in-custody death of 37-year-old Natasha McKenna is still ongoing, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Captain Steve Elbert said.
McKenna, who had a history of mental illness, was being transported to the City of Alexandria police, who had issued a felony warrant for her arrest.
During her extraction, McKenna became combative, spit and kicked. Several deputies attempted to restrain her physically. In the process, they used a taser on the inmate four times. A 48-minute video of the ordeal was released by Sheriff Stacey Kincaid in September 2015.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh announced in a Sept. 8 report that he would not be pursuing criminal charges against any of the deputies involved.
The Office of the Medical Examiner had determined McKenna’s cause of death was “excited delirium associated with physical restraint including use of conducted energy device.” It was an accident, the office said, with McKenna’s schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as contributing factors.
Elbert did not respond to further questions by deadline as to what has prolonged the administrative investigation or when it might be completed.
