Support for Survivors

Eagles donate $1,000 to sexual assault and domestic violence program

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 871 in Alexandria presented a check for $1,000 to Debbie Evans, Division Chief of the Alexandria Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Program, to help provide support to survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

“This is an important charity,” said McDermott as he presented the check to Evans May 28 at the Eagles headquarters in Old Town. “This type of abuse is on the rise and what little we can do we’re going to try to do and help out as best we can.”

Despite the limited hours of the Eagles facility due to COVID-10 restrictions over the last year, the organization was able to raise the funds through membership donations.

“We raised money through clubroom donations, gaming machines, and the philanthropic work of our membership,” McDermott added.

According to Evans, the program relies on donations to help meet the needs of survivors.

“Any funding at all will help survivors,” Evans said. “This money will be able to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence and meet basic needs like rental assistance, utilities, clothing -- anything we are not able to accommodate.”

The Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence hotlines operate 24/7 and can be reached at 703-683-7273 (Sexual Assault Hotline) or 703-746-4911 (Domestic Violence Hotline).

“We couldn’t do it without the support of the community,” Evans added. “We really appreciate the Eagles assisting us with our clients and look forward to the collaboration.”
