ASC to Honor Duncan, Sheridan

High school athletes to be awarded $50,000.

Prominent real estate executive Lee Duncan and retired Arlington County Circuit Court Judge Paul Sheridan will be honored at the 65th annual Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Awards Banquet May 31 at the Westin Alexandria Hotel.

Sheridan and Duncan, both former standout student-athletes from the class of 1954 at George Washington High School, will be inducted into the ASC Hall of Fame.

The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of $50,000 worth of scholarships to 20 college-bound student-athletes from Alexandria’s four high schools.

“Recognizing the best of the city’s high school athletes has been the mission of the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club since its founding in 1947,” said ASC president Marion Moon. “With the pandemic, these scholarships are more important than ever to these deserving seniors and their families.”

The program will also feature the presentation of Athlete of the Year trophies to the top male and female athletes in varsity sports from Bishop Ireton, Episcopal, St. Stephens & St. Agnes, and Alexandria City High School. Additional awards include Coach of Year, Recreation Department Outstanding Athlete, Sportsman of the Year, and the ASC Civic Award.

The Old Dominion Boat Club will be recognized with the Civic Award for its continuous support of high school rowing in Alexandria since 1929. ODBC has voluntarily provided coaches, racing shells, oars, facilities, and other support to a program that has become one of the largest and most successful in North America.

Duncan was a football standout at GWHS who achieved All-State honors in track and later became a record-setting ACC Hurdles Champion at the University of Maryland. In 1956, he tied the school record time, which stood for eight years until broken by the future All-American and Olympic Champion, Reynaldo Nehemiah.

Sheridan, also a football standout as well as class president his junior year, was captain of GWHS’s first National Championship Crew. He later captained the crew team at Columbia University and served as a Marine Corps officer.

The awards gala will be held at the Westin Alexandria Hotel, 400 Courthouse Square, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 each. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www.alexandriavasports.org.
