During their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors presented a resolution to honor and recognize Karla Bruce, the county’s former Chief Equity Officer.Bruce who has served 25 years in the county. Her significant contributions include creating the One Fairfax Policy. “One Fairfax is a joint racial and social equity policy of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board. The 2016 One Fairfax Resolution commits the county and schools to intentionally consider equity when making policies or delivering programs and services.”
Chairman Jeffrey McKay highlighted the significant generational impacts of Bruce’s work, emphasizing its importance in improving the quality of life for future generations.
“Because of the work that‘s here, these impacts are going to be significant,” said Supervisor Rodney Lusk, Franconia District.
Supervisor Jimmy Bierman, Dranesville District, said Bruce has not stopped trying to ensure that people understand what equity means, “that a rising tide DOES lift all boats, and that we are all in this together.”
Supervisor Andres Jimenez, Mason District, said Bruce’s critically important work also allows the younger generations to see themselves in her efforts.
Bruce said it had been an amazing journey. “Outside of being a parent, I don't believe I've had another life experience where I've had the opportunity to hold and shape something so important while at the same time being molded and shaped.”
